Radon Screening

Radon is a colourless, odourless radioactive gas that comes from the ground and can build up indoors. A radon screening measures the level in the home over a short period so you have an early reading to guide your next step, whether that is peace of mind or a long-term test.

Radon screening is offered in the Canmore and Banff area. Add it when you book a home inspection or ask about it on its own.

01

Why test for radon

Health Canada calls radon the number one cause of lung cancer for non-smokers in Canada. It can't be seen or smelled, and levels vary from one house to the next on the same street, so testing is the only way to know.

02

Screening and long-term testing

A screening is a short-term measurement that gives an early indication. Health Canada recommends a long-term test of at least 91 days, ideally three to twelve months including part of the heating season, before any decision on mitigation. If the screening shows an elevated level, Kyle will explain how to follow up with a long-term test.

03

The Canadian guideline

Health Canada's guideline is 200 becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³) as an annual average in the normal living area. If a long-term test is above it, reduce the level within a year, and sooner the higher it is. Radon reduction should be done by a professional certified under the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP).
